Welcome to Friends of Mahratta

Mahratta has been listed with the State Heritage Council and is acknowledged as one of the finest Art Deco mansions in Sydney. It has one of the few remaining gardens designed by Paul Sorensen in the Sydney Metropolitan area. He also designed the Blue Mountains gardens “The Everglades” and “The Braes”.

The Friends of Mahratta was established in 2010 to raise funds for the care and preservation of the house and garden as well as opening the property for community use and enjoyment.

Mahratta began as a family home and was later owned by the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac) so opportunities for the general public to visit were limited. Friends of Mahratta hosts a variety of events, giving the public the opportunity to visit this magnificent house and garden.

Our major fundraising event for the year is ‘Behind the Wall’ normally held in Spring. The grounds and house are open to the public and refreshments are served. House tours are very popular. We also have two Garden days during the year where community groups are invited to come and visit the property.
